It seems that many people choose a word every year, one word that serves as a sort of guide, a compass, throughout the year. One word to meditate and let unfold day after day, month after month, sometimes in unexpected ways. I discovered this practice last year and have found it intriguing, but I thought "that's not for me", how could I begin to choose just one word, for a whole year? I watched from afar people looking for "their" word, finding it, choosing it, even discussing it on their blogs and in facebook groups. I even started musing about it, "what if...?", and I thought about all my hopes, my goals for this new year. My fears too.  So many things, and just one word? No way. Or maybe something like "abundance"? No, that didn't sound right and I just gave up, and stopped thinking about it. After all, as fun as it seemed, I didn't feel that I "needed" a word of the year.

Except... well, I was putting some supplies away in my cupboard last Sunday, when I heard it. It was a whisper, but not the kind you can ignore, and it caught me off guard. Truth. TRUTH. Swallowing hard here: that is a big word, a challenging word. Maybe the hardest one to live up to. I could have racked my brains and I would NEVER have come up with that word, I would never have chosen it. But it seems that the moment I stopped thinking, it chose me. So here it is, my word of the year, my compass: Truth. I don't know how it will unfold for me in the next 12 months, but I can already guess that it will be a daily reminder to stay true to myself and true to my path as an artist. I am also guessing it will invite some other words such as authenticity, vulnerability and faith. A very full agenda...

What about you? I'd love to hear about your word of the year and how you came up with it!
