Weaving is timeless and universal, it can be done by anyone! This gentle and intuitive process has a soft, meditative rhythm that makes you slow down and invites day-dreaming. And when you do it the "mixed media" way, with plenty of exciting textures and materials, it's also really fun!

The Woven Dreams class is exceptional. Laly shows ways to use low cost materials to build a loom and with skill and excellent videos, she explains the process, step by step. You never get lost in her explanations. Highly recommended.

Get ready to play

Weaving is one of my earliest memories of making art as little girl, and I’m so excited to share this lovely process with you! In this delightful & whimsical workshop, we’re going to work with beautiful, unusual and recycled materials (yarns, ribbon, leaves, book pages, grasses and even metal!). We're going to weave exquisite mini abstract artworks that can be framed or displayed as wall-hangings, and can also be turned into the yummiest journal covers!

step by step

I will guide you step by step as you:

  • Create a simple, portable loom (super easy!)

  • Gather your materials

  • Find inspiration for textures and color schemes from photographs and natural elements

  • Get started with basic weaving techniques

  • Become daring and creative with more techniques and materials to add dimension and interest (weaving paper, steel wool, feathers and more!)

  • Bring your piece to completion with lots of ideas for finishing touches

  • Lovingly take your artwork off the loom and tie it all nicely together

  • Choose how you wish to mount your woven pieces: wall hanging? journal cover? mounted on a canvas or a plaster substrate? The sky's the limit!

  • The class is in English and closed captions are available on all videos

This online workshop has around 2 hours of highly informative videos. If you've ever taken a class with me, you know I like to explain everything in detail while keeping it clear and super inspiring!

I am in the “hunter/gatherer” stage of my much anticipated weaving - making sure my bundle is filled with things that are meaningful. It feels like I’ve been waiting for this workshop for a long time. You stand accused of bringing entirely too much beauty and joy to the world.

texture & touch

Texture is one of the most important aspects of art... and one of the most enjoyable! I love "touchable" art. Art that involves more senses than just sight, dimensional pieces that are so intriguing and yummy you can't help but want to touch them... And fiber art takes this to a whole other level! When I look at my woven pieces, I see small abstract artworks with a tactile quality that I couldn't create any other way.

Touch comes before sight, before speech. It is the first language and the last, and it always tells the truth.

Sustainable Art

gather your materials

For this class, you won't need any fancy supplies or "art" materials: it all starts with looking around you, collecting textures and colors and using what you already have in new ways...

Here are some great sources for weaving materials:

  • Old clothes: that lovely dress that no longer fits, those baby clothes that are so soft but stained, the lace on this pretty night gown you never wear...

  • Knitting left-overs: You wouldn't believe how many balls of wool await in dusty cupboards around the world, especially the tangled ones that no one will ever bother sorting out... If you don't have any yourself, ask around to friends and family for left-overs from their knitting projects.

  • Nature: get outside and open your eyes to the beauties of nature as you collect twigs, leaves, flowers, seeds, feathers and grasses to incorporate into your weaving.

  • Found objects: lots of discarded materials lend themselves so well to weaving! Look for plastic bags, bubble wrap, burlap bags and other interesting packagings, plastic mesh, mismatched pieces of string, steel wool, paint-stained rags, old jewelry (that broken necklace... weave it!)

  • Paper: book pages, tissue paper, tea bags, wrapping paper, natural fiber paper such as mulberry... any kind of paper that's not too stiff will work great, and you can even decorate them before incorporating them into your art!
