When I started as a mixed media artist, I mostly loved to create large paintings. It took me a few years before I started art journaling. But when I did, I realized that it made my whole creative process so much richer… and my paintings better! I can honestly say that art journaling has made me grow as an artist like nothing else, and the same is possible for you too!
Here is why:
Art journaling helps you make more art, more often, and build those creative muscles! Practice is absolutely key when you want to grow as an artist. When I don’t have the time to set up my easel, I can still play on my pages. Then when I do work on a painting, my creativity flows much better than if I had done nothing for weeks.
If you learn (and dare!) to really use your art journal as a creative tool, it can become the best playground. It’s not just about making pretty pages! Your art journal is the best place to try new color combinations, new art supplies, themes and ideas, personal mark-making etc. Then you can take all your discoveries to the canvas!
Your art journal is a sacred, intimate space where you can truly be yourself. Making art just for you, without judgement, allows your truest stories and emotions to show up. When you gently unveil them and make friends with them on your pages, you can then make art that is much braver and more authentic.
In this workshop, I’m taking you along step by step as I create a big, super layered mixed media painting by drawing inspiration (and courage!) from my art journal. You will be right by my side as I look for ideas, start my painting, get stuck, find solutions and start again, all the way to finishing touches!
Among many other tips and techniques, I’m going to show you how to:
Use a viewfinder to look for composition ideas inside your pages. Your next painting might be hiding in plain sight!
Translate ideas for color schemes, collage, imagery, mark-making and more, from your pages to your painting.
Be brave and challenge yourself to use ideas or techniques you’ve experimented with in your art journal, and take them to the next step. In the lesson, you’ll see me play (and struggle) with red!
Use your art journal as a resource whenever you get stuck: combine inspiration from different pages into one painting, find ideas that work in the journal to solve problems on your canvas!
