New Year, New Journal

New Year, New Journal

with a video tutorial

I did it! I finished my art journal in December (you can watch the full video session of my last page HERE) and I’m all set to welcome the New Year with a fresh new one! I have also just reopened the doors to my online class The Artist & the Journal and I’m excited to start my journal at the same time as the new participants! If you’d like to find out more about the class, click below:

Here are my two journals side be side! I like to give them a title and it always seems to come up as I paint the front cover (I like to write intuitively all over the cover too!). The first one I called my “Book of Days” because it was my first art journal and I really wanted to make this a regular practice. It didn’t turn out to be a “daily” one, but I found my own rhythm and that’s all that matters.

I have called the new one “A Soul Story Book” because that’s what my art journal process truly feels like now: filling pages with the stories of my soul. And I don’t have to know what “story” is going to emerge when I begin a new page. Nor does it have to “make sense”. The page most often builds up little by little, in a very organic way, with whatever needs to emerge in the moment. Then I can flip through the pages and let the images and words speak to me, like they would in any story book! And by the way, stay tuned for a full flip-through video in my next post…

I love seeing my big, fat, yummy book next to the much thinner empty journal, it gives me such a sense of possibility! Who knows what all these blank new pages will become in the coming months…

A video TUtorial for you!

To me, the best art journal is one that takes wet media well, opens flat from the first page to the last, doesn't cost a fortune and has just the right number of pages. Finding such a journal can be a real quest! That’s why I make my journals myself.

Here is a simple step-by-step video tutorial to make your own art journal from a pad of watercolor paper. This is from my online class The Artist & the Journal and I hope you give it a try!

The journal you’ve seen me create in the video is actually the very same that has now become my new Soul Story Book for 2020! If you are intrigued by the practice of art journaling, I invite you to go to my previous post and watch the full video session where I share the making of my last page for 2019 (plus a sweet gratitude ritual). And if you’re ready to dive in, now is the perfect time to join me in The Artist & the Journal!

Registration for this delightful online journey is open for just a few more days and you can watch a preview of the class below:

Art Journaling is the ONE creative practice that has had the most profound and positive impact on my life as an artist. I’m excited to share more with you soon!

Light & love,
