A celebration of love

A celebration of love

If you are already bored with the approaching Valentine’s Day celebrations, read on: I used to be too. For the longest time, it seemed silly to me (and hubby) to celebrate our love on a day that meant nothing special to us. Just because everybody does it. And I’ll be honest: we were even just a tad cynical about it.

But that was before…

  • Before I got rid of cynicism in my life and in my heart (cynicism just feels very sad to me now, it’s like the opposite of joy and not remotely funny)

  • Before we became parents, and making time just for us became more challenging, (it’s a lot less spontaneous when you need to book the baby-sitter ahead of time and be home by eleven)

  • Before I understood that as humans, we are actually one, all of us, all connected, and that when we come together with intention, we can change the world in magical ways. I’m pretty sure that when millions of people celebrate the power of love all over the world, all at the same time, we collectively and significantly raise the vibe of our planet. So why not join in?

But there’s a deeper layer…

Celebrating love could be about so much more than honoring a relationship, no matter how beautiful it is. Because to be able to truly love anyone, you need to love yourself first. Truly, deeply and unapologetically. That's the only way you can show up in the world with your whole heart.

Self-love is like the roots of a beautiful tree. Each branch is someone or something you care about, and the stronger the roots, the healthier, taller and more beautiful the tree will be. Sure, the roots are not that glamourous. They’re hidden under the surface, in the dirt, invisible. But for a tree to grow, the roots actually need to take up as much space under-ground as the whole tree does above: That’s how much you need to take care of YOU!

Nurture your relationship with yourself, dedicate time to things that you love and that keep you happy, healthy, growing and thriving.

Since you’re reading this blog, my guess is that creative self-care is one of the things your heart is yearning for. Expressing ourselves creatively and indulging in blissful hours of art-making (or art-contemplating) is so good for our soul. Our heart. Our roots. That’s not being selfish, because tending to your own needs and desires automatically ripples out to everyone around you. And especially to those you love.

The pictures in this post are from one of the two projects I will be teaching in Life Book 2019. It’ss all about self-love and embracing who we are, so that we can show up in the world with our whole heart. At the beginning of the process we start by writing little love notes and permission slips to ourselves and believe me when I tell you that wasn’t easy… but it felt so good!
