The best art journal will take all kinds of media really well and open flat from the first page to the last:
You can make your own with a large pad of watercolor paper and THIS TURORIAL
The Dylusions journal is a good ready-made option
> your “Story elements”
a blank postcard (vintage or not), or you can make one with cardstock
a bookpage (or a copy) from a story you like
a small stash of papers, ephemera and fabrics to make a junk journal. Make sure to include some see-through materials like teabag paper, cheesecloth, lace...
one or two envelopes (it's good to have a few different sizes to choose from)
a used, dried & empty teabag, with the string and label still attached
a laser print of words that are meaningful to you: an inspiring quote, favorite poem, affirmations... or you can borrow mine by printing out the bonus handout.
Optional: a few dimensional elements like buttons, rusty bits, feathers, dried leaves...

A few painting/mark-making tools like a plastic card, palette knife, silicone tool, small brayer, bubble wrap...
Optional: stamps (text) & archival inkpad
White gesso and/or white acrylic paint
Black gesso and/or black acrylic paint
Watercolors (or other paints & inks) in colors of your choice. I'm mainly using Moon Glow (Daniel Smith) and Raw Umber. Neocolor II crayons are a great option too.

> Pens, pencils etc.
Black Stabilo All water-soluble pencil or equivalent (Neocolor II, Stabilo Woody, Derwent Inktense, or a piece of charcoal)
Regular graphite pencil or mechanical pencil
White paint marker like Posca or Molotow (my new favorite, because you can refill it)
Optional: any other pens, pencils or crayons that you like!
