ART JOURNAL

A good art journal is a friend for life! It should take all kinds of media really well and open flat:

  • You can make your own with a large pad of watercolor paper and THIS TURORIAL

  • The Dylusions journal is a good ready-made option

NB: Although this project is meant to be created in a journal, it’s completely possible to do it on a canvas, a sheet of watercolor paper or any other substrate of your choice.

BASIC Setup

  • A palette (or a simple white plate) Personally I often use a whole lot of small, round, stackable ceramic palettes.

  • Parchment or wax paper to protect your pages

  • Paper clips to keep your pages flat

  • Water (a spray bottle can come in handy)

  • A rag

  • Something to protect your surface (table-cloth, plastic bag...)

  • Something to protect your clothes (apron, old shirt...)

  • OPTIONAL: Craft heat gun (embossing tool) to speed up drying

  • All sorts of papers (ask around!): magazines, colored tissue paper, printed napkins, sheet music, vintage wallpaper, vintage prints, text paper, paper doily etc.

  • A used copy of your favorite Jane Austen book that you don’t mind tearing pages from!

  • Matte gel medium

  • OPTIONAL: lace, ribbon or other pretty fibers (I ended up not using mine in this project, but they are wonderful for finishing touches)

Paints & inks

Use the colors that you love most! For this project it’s important to use translucent colors, plus some opaque white.

White (Acrylic paints)

  • Titanium white acrylic paint

  • OPTIONAL: Titanium white high flow acrylic

  • OPTIONAL: a very light neutral tone. I’m using Naples Yellow Light but you can simply add a touch of yellow ochre or Titan Buff to your white
